Viaplay Group conducts operations primarily in the Nordic region with expansions into the Baltics, Netherlands, Poland, UK, US, and Canada via direct-to-consumer streaming and partnerships; it also distributes content globally through Viaplay Select on partner platforms. Founded in 2018 as a spin-off from Modern Times Group and headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, the company, formerly Nordic Entertainment Group AB and rebranded in May 2022, maintains a 50% stake in Allente, the leading Nordic pay-TV distributor formed from the 2020 merger of Viasat and Canal Digital. Recent developments include Canal+ Group, alongside PPF, increasing its minority stake to 29% in January 2024 as part of a SEK 4 billion recapitalization to reduce debt and renegotiate financing; the completion in November 2025 of the acquisition of Telenor's remaining 50% stake in Allente for full ownership, financed by cash and new debt, to enhance cross-platform offerings and customer growth; a sublicensing agreement with TV Norway in 2025 to bolster sports content distribution; and the appointment of Jonas Karlén as EVP and CEO of Viaplay Sweden in late 2025 to lead streaming, TV, and radio operations.
