Business
CHAR Technologies Ltd. (TSXV:YES) is a Canada-based cleantech development and environmental services company that specializes in high temperature pyrolysis (HTP) technology to convert woody biomass, agricultural residuals, organic waste, and construction materials into renewable energy products including renewable natural gas (RNG) and green hydrogen; as well as valuable biocarbons such as biocoal (CleanFyre), biochar, and activated biochar (SulfaCHAR) that serves as a carbon-neutral alternative to metallurgical coal in steelmaking. The company also provides environmental compliance, management, engineering, and resource efficiency services. Founded in 2014 and headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, CHAR Technologies operates primarily in Canada through subsidiaries including Char Biocarbon Inc., Altech Environmental Consulting Ltd., Char Technologies Thorold Inc., and Char Technologies USA, LLC, with projects targeting industrial clients in waste management, steel production, and energy sectors across North America. CHAR Technologies focuses on closed-loop, carbon-neutral solutions that address waste diversion, decarbonization, and circular economy principles, including PFAS destruction in waste streams via pyrolysis. Recent developments include an $8 million project-level equity investment from The BMI Group in July 2025 for the Thorold Renewable Energy Facility in Ontario, establishing 50/50 ownership and targeting commercial biocarbon production in Phase 1 by Q4 2025 and RNG in Phase 2 by Q3 2026; a prior $2 million private placement with BMI in May 2025; strategic partnerships such as with Synagro and Baltimore City Department of Public Works for PFAS pilot testing, Lake Nipigon Forest Management for feedstock supply, and invitation to join the Canadian Iron & Steel Energy Research Association (CISERA) in October 2025 as the first biocarbon producer; $2.5 million funding from the Government of Québec for the Saint-Félicien biocarbon and green hydrogen project; transition of Altech environmental consulting assets to Cambium Inc. in 2024; and ongoing construction at Thorold with feedstock handling system installation as of October 2025.
