Business
Kongsberg Gruppen ASA is a Norwegian technology group that develops and supplies advanced high-technology systems and solutions to customers in the defence, maritime, energy, fisheries, offshore oil and gas, aerospace, and renewables industries. The company operates through four main business areas: Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, which provides command and control systems, weapons guidance, surveillance, communications solutions, missiles, air defence systems including NASAMS, remote weapon stations, sonars, navigation for marine vessels and submarines, advanced composites, and space-related equipment and services; Kongsberg Maritime, which delivers positioning, dynamic positioning, navigation, automation, monitoring, surveillance, thrusters, winches, cranes, hydro-acoustics, autonomous underwater vessels, seabed surveying, and fishery systems for merchant vessels, offshore installations, subsea operations, and specialist vessels; Kongsberg Discovery, which offers underwater acoustics, sensors, and mapping solutions; and Kongsberg Digital, which supplies digital twin technology, simulation, monitoring, analysis, and optimization services for energy, maritime, and utilities sectors. Founded in 1814 and headquartered in Kongsberg, Norway, the company employs approximately 14,600 people and maintains operations in nearly 40 countries worldwide, with the Norwegian state holding a 50.004% ownership stake. In recent developments, Kongsberg Gruppen proposes to spin off its Kongsberg Maritime business as an independent listed company on the Oslo Stock Exchange while consolidating Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace and Kongsberg Discovery into a single technology and defence entity to capitalize on sustainability and security-driven growth opportunities. Kongsberg Discovery agreed in June 2025 to acquire Sonatech, a U.S.-based underwater acoustics firm, to enhance its product portfolio and market access with the U.S. Navy. Additionally, in 2025, Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace and Thales established a 50/50 joint venture combining their Norwegian secure communications businesses, including software-defined radios and crypto networks, to address NATO and allied defence needs with projected revenues doubling to NOK 3 billion by decade-end; the company also initiated a strategic review of Kongsberg Digital, potentially leading to a sale. These moves follow strong 2024 financials with nearly NOK 90 billion in order intake and continued revenue growth into Q3 2025 driven by defence demand.
