Business
Novozymes A/S, a biotechnology company specializing in the research, development, and production of industrial enzymes, microorganisms, proteins, and biopharmaceutical ingredients, operates across diverse sectors including household care, food and beverages, agriculture, bioenergy, animal nutrition, pharmaceuticals, biopharma, pulp and paper, textiles, leather, and wastewater treatment; its core offerings encompass over 700 enzyme types such as lipases, proteases, oxidoreductases, and carbohydrases, alongside nutraceutical ingredients including natural botanicals, vitamins, drain openers, hard surface cleaners, medical cleaning solutions, septic tank treatments, ware washing products, professional laundry services, and industrial hygiene solutions. Founded in 2000 as a spin-off from Novo Nordisk and headquartered in Bagsværd, Denmark, the company serves more than 130 markets worldwide with operations in Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, China, India, Brazil, Argentina, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada, targeting industrial, agricultural, consumer, and health-related customers through its business segments of Food & Health Biosolutions (food, beverages, human health) and Planetary Health Biosolutions (household care, agriculture, energy, and technical processing). In a transformative development, Novozymes merged with Chr. Hansen in January 2024 to form Novonesis A/S, creating a global biosolutions leader with combined annual revenue exceeding €3.7 billion, approximately 10,000 employees, and enhanced capabilities in enzymes, microbial solutions, and fermented proteins; this strategic combination, announced in December 2022 and cleared by regulators, unlocks synergies in innovation, commercial scale, and sustainability-focused growth, including 18 new solution launches in 2023 and ongoing investments in RDI for industrial enzymes and microorganisms. As Novonesis, the entity advances its GROW strategy with 2030 targets of 6-9% organic sales CAGR, ~39% adjusted EBITDA margin, and ~16% adjusted ROIC excluding goodwill, alongside a €100 million share buyback program for 2025 and elevated capex for innovation, ERP systems, sustainability, and global capacity expansion in areas like biopharma processing aids, future fuels, chemicals, and specialized nutrition proteins.
