Business
Northwest Biotherapeutics, Inc. (NWBO) is a clinical-stage biotechnology company that develops personalized immune therapies for solid tumor cancers using its proprietary DCVax platform technology, which activates a patient's own dendritic cells to mobilize the immune system against tumors; the platform enables production of individualized vaccines without the toxicities associated with chemotherapy. The company's lead candidate, DCVax-L, targets glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most aggressive form of primary brain cancer, following completion of a 331-patient Phase III trial with results published in JAMA Oncology; DCVax-Direct addresses inoperable solid tumors after a 40-patient Phase I trial, with Phase II trials planned; DCVax-Prostate has advanced through Phase II for late-stage prostate cancer and received clearance for Phase III; additional applications include a Phase I/II trial with the University of Pennsylvania for advanced ovarian cancer. Founded in 1996 and headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, the company operates GMP manufacturing facilities in the UK, including Sawston and previously London, with clinical trials conducted across the US, Europe, and other regions targeting patients with GBM, inoperable tumors, prostate cancer, and ovarian cancer. Recent developments include the October 2025 closing of its acquisition of Advent BioServices Ltd., making Advent a wholly owned subsidiary to integrate technologies, intellectual property from NWBio, Advent, and Flaskworks, streamline supply chains, close the London GMP facility, reallocate resources to Sawston and US capacity expansion, and scale manufacturing for DCVax products; recovery of 19 million NWBio securities previously issued to Advent; a $5 million convertible promissory note financing with YA II PN, Ltd. for Sawston Grade C manufacturing suite construction and operations; ongoing review of its Marketing Authorization Application for DCVax-L by the UK MHRA, with potential approval by late 2025 or early 2026; and plans for next-generation immunotherapies and pipeline diversification.
