Business
Oceana Group Limited is a global fishing and food processing company that operates across the full value chain, including catching or procuring, processing, marketing, distributing and selling seafood products; its core offerings encompass canned pilchard, sardine, tuna, anchovy and mackerel primarily under the iconic Lucky Star brand, as well as fishmeal and fish oil derived from anchovy, redeye herring, Gulf menhaden and cannery offcuts; wild-caught seafood such as horse mackerel, hake, rock lobster and squid sold under brands including Oceana Lobster and Calamari Fishing; and ancillary services like refrigerated warehouse facilities and logistical support. The company serves consumer, industrial and export markets in South Africa, Namibia, the rest of Africa, North America, Europe, the Far East and 46 countries worldwide, with a fleet of over 50 vessels, multiple canneries, production facilities and subsidiaries including Daybrook Fisheries in the United States. Founded in 1918 and headquartered in Cape Town, South Africa, Oceana maintains listings on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE: OCE), Namibian Stock Exchange and A2X. Recent strategic developments include substantial investments of up to R700 million in factory and vessel upgrades to enhance efficiencies and expand production capacity, particularly for Lucky Star canned foods and a new canned meat plant on the West Coast marking the first such investment in the region in over 20 years to meet demand for affordable protein and enable exports to the SADC region; a R1.6 billion sustainability-linked loan facility with Investec and partners to refinance debt and support growth while tying reduced interest rates to carbon emission reductions and safety improvements in South Africa and Namibia; a decision to divest the dedicated horse mackerel vessel Desert Diamond in favor of a versatile dual-purpose replacement; expansion into canned meats alongside growing export demand for wild-caught products; and operational shifts at Daybrook Fisheries toward domestic pet food sales amid global tariff changes and fish oil price corrections, contributing to record Lucky Star volumes and a 58% operating profit increase in African operations for the year ended September 2025 despite a group-level profit decline.
