Business
Japan Engine Corporation designs, develops, manufactures, maintains, repairs, sells, and licenses marine internal combustion engines and related components. Its core products include UE engines used in bulk carriers, tankers, car carrier ships, container ships, and other commercial vessels. The company also manufactures shield machine components for subway construction and tunnel boring, large-sized products such as injection molding machines and testing devices, as well as pressure-relief control valve blocks, cylinder covers, piston crowns, piston heads, metallic sliding bearings, bedplates, shield machines, and resin granulators. Founded in 1910 and headquartered in Akashi, Japan, the company operates primarily within Japan but serves a global marine market. In recent years, Japan Engine Corporation has positioned itself as a first mover in next-generation fuel engines, focusing on the development and commercialization of ammonia and hydrogen dual-fuel engines to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A major recent milestone includes the completion of the world's first full-scale ammonia-fueled engine, the 7UEC50LSJA-HPSCR, which underwent successful land-based trials in 2025 and is scheduled for installation on an ammonia-fueled carrier entering service in 2026. The company has also entered into strategic technical agreements, including a notable partnership with Akasaka Diesels Limited for the development and popularization of next-generation fuel engines, and has signed a landmark technical agreement with Accelleron for the integration of turbochargers into its UE engines. Furthermore, Japan Engine Corporation completed the acquisition of the marine diesel engines business of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Engine Co. Ltd. Recently, it initiated construction of a new factory slated to begin operations in fiscal year 2028, supported by government subsidies aimed at advancing low-emission engine technologies. The company changed its name from Kobe Diesel Co., Ltd. to Japan Engine Corporation in 2017 and continues to expand its marine engine product line with a sustainable and innovative approach.
