Business
Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. - Petrobras (PBR-A) is a majority state-owned integrated energy company engaged in the exploration, production, refining, transportation, and marketing of oil, natural gas, and petrochemicals. The company produces crude oil and natural gas primarily from offshore fields in Brazil's pre-salt layer; refines petroleum into fuels such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), as well as asphalt and lubricants under brands like Petrobras Premium and Podium; distributes fuels, lubricants, and aviation kerosene through a network of over 7,500 service stations; and generates electricity via natural gas-fired power plants and biofuels. Petrobras offers petrochemical products including ethylene, propylene, and polyethylene; engages in gas processing and LNG regasification; and provides engineering, construction, and maintenance services to the oil and gas sector through subsidiaries such as Petrobras Engenharia and Transpetro. Headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the company was founded in 1953 and operates principally in Brazil, with international activities in exploration and trading across the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia, serving industrial, commercial, and retail customers. In recent developments, Petrobras completed the divestiture of its 37.5% stake in the Araucária Refinery (Refap) to the Raízen consortium in early 2025, advancing its asset optimization strategy; formed a strategic alliance with TotalEnergies in 2024 to develop low-carbon solutions, including bioenergy and carbon capture projects; launched the Petrobras 75 floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit in the Mero field in late 2024, boosting pre-salt production capacity to over 200,000 barrels per day; secured a $3 billion financing round from international banks in mid-2025 to fund sustainable energy transitions; and announced plans for a new biofuels unit focused on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, targeting commercial operations by 2027 amid Brazil's energy transition push.
