Business
Ross Stores, Inc. (Nasdaq: ROST) operates as the largest off-price apparel and home fashion retailer in the United States, offering branded and designer merchandise at 20-60% discounts from department and specialty store prices through its primary banners Ross Dress for Less and dd's DISCOUNTS; core products encompass women's, men's and children's apparel, footwear, accessories, handbags, beauty items, home fashions including bedding, bath, kitchen accessories, decorative housewares, furniture accents, toys and jewelry. The company targets middle-income households and price-conscious consumers aged 18-54, predominantly female, serving them via an opportunistic buying model that sources overstock, closeouts and manufacturer overruns for constantly changing inventory with weekly new arrivals of 10,000-15,000 items across 18,000-22,000 SKUs per store. Founded in 1950 as Ross Department Store and restructured into its modern off-price format in 1982 following acquisition by investors including Stuart Moldaw, Ross Stores maintains headquarters in Dublin, California, and conducts geographic operations across 44 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico through 2,273 locations including 1,909 Ross Dress for Less and 364 dd's DISCOUNTS stores. In fiscal 2025, the company completed aggressive expansion plans by opening 90 net new stores—36 Ross Dress for Less and four dd's DISCOUNTS in September-October alone—entering new markets in Michigan, New Jersey and New York while advancing toward long-term targets of at least 2,900 Ross and 700 dd's locations; fiscal 2024 revenues reached $21.1 billion, reflecting 3.7% growth driven by 5% sales increase and 2% comparable store sales in Q2 2025. Ross Stores recently appointed James Conroy as CEO effective February 2, 2025, succeeding Barbara Rentler who led since 2014, and expanded distribution operations in York County amid ongoing efforts to enhance supply chain efficiency across seven centers. The retailer continues strategic growth with no major acquisitions or partnerships announced in the past 1-2 years, focusing instead on organic store development, inventory turnover of 5.2 times annually and community initiatives including over $46 million donated since 2015 to Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
