Business
SGL Carbon SE develops and manufactures carbon-based materials and products, including specialty graphite, carbon fibers, composites, and process technology components; offers graphite electrodes, cathodes, mold stock, mechanical carbons, corrosion-resistant products and systems, carbon-ceramic brake discs, isostatic graphite for compound semiconductors, silicon carbide coatings, heat exchangers, columns, quenchers, pumps, pipings, sealing materials, precursor and acrylic fibers, non-crimp and woven fabrics, and pre-impregnated materials; and provides tailored solutions for industries such as climate-friendly mobility, semiconductor technology, LEDs, solar and wind energy, fuel cells, energy storage systems, chemicals, and industrial applications. The company operates through four business units: Graphite Solutions for specialty graphites; Process Technology for large-scale industrial plants; Carbon Fibers for high-strength lightweight applications; and Composite Solutions for processing stages of composites. Founded in 1992 with roots tracing to 1878 and headquartered in Wiesbaden, Germany, SGL Carbon maintains 29 production sites across Europe, North America, and Asia, serving global markets with approximately 4,700 employees. In recent developments, SGL Carbon acquired BMW Group's 49% stake in joint ventures SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers GmbH & Co. KG in 2025, achieving full ownership to control the carbon fiber value chain; expanded graphite production capacities in St. Marys, North America, and Shanghai, China, for semiconductors; advanced restructuring of the Carbon Fibers unit to improve profitability amid subdued demand; and progressed capacity expansions with Brembo for carbon-ceramic brakes at Meitingen and Stezzano sites.
