Business
Sherritt International Corporation (TSX: S; OTC: SHERF) is a Canadian resource company that mines, processes, refines, and markets nickel and cobalt, critical minerals for the energy transition; it also generates and sells electricity in Cuba and produces fertilizers and chemicals at its Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta facility. The company operates through its 50% interest in the Moa Joint Venture ("Moa JV") in Cuba, where it mines lateritic ore and produces mixed sulphide precipitate ("MSP") containing nickel and cobalt that is shipped to its 100%-owned Fort Saskatchewan refinery for processing into high-purity nickel powder, nickel briquettes, cobalt powder, and cobalt briquettes used in stainless steel, alloy steel, chemicals, welding applications, and electric vehicle battery cathodes; additionally, it manufactures and sells agricultural fertilizers including anhydrous ammonia, granular ammonium sulfate, and crystalline ammonium sulfate, as well as sulfuric acid, zinc sulfides, and copper sulfides primarily in Western Canada. Through its 33⅓% interest in Energas S.A., Sherritt constructs and operates combined-cycle power plants in Cuba with 506 MW capacity fueled by natural gas, representing about 10% of Cuba's national grid; it provides technologies including hydrometallurgical processes licensed to over 40 global sites and offers technical support, process optimization, and drilling services. Founded in 1927 and headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, the company maintains key operations in Canada and Cuba, with products marketed in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Recent developments include the completion of phase two commissioning of the Moa JV expansion in October 2025, featuring a sixth leach train to boost MSP production by 20% and enhance refinery utilization; implementation of a long-term Moa recovery plan announced in July 2025 with increased expatriate technical support to address Cuban economic challenges and drive higher output; and significant cost reductions in Q3 2025 via workforce cuts yielding $20 million in annual savings atop $17 million from 2024 initiatives. Electricity production benefited from new gas wells online in Q4 2024 and Q3 2025, alongside a 20-year contract extension for Energas to 2043; the Cobalt Swap agreement, finalized in 2022, has delivered about $170 million in proceeds by end-2024 toward recovering $368 million in Cuban receivables. In November 2025, shareholder Pala Investments requisitioned a meeting and nominated directors amid strategic reviews, while Q3 2025 results showed revised 2025 nickel guidance to 25,000-26,000 tonnes (Sherritt's share) due to Cuban disruptions including Hurricane Melissa.
