Business
The Southern Company is a leading energy provider engaged in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity and natural gas across the southeastern United States. Its core products and services include electric power generation through traditional and renewable sources such as nuclear, coal, natural gas, solar, and wind; natural gas distribution; energy marketing; fiber optics network services; and distributed energy solutions. The company operates through subsidiaries including three electric operating companies serving retail customers in multiple states, Southern Power Company which focuses on wholesale competitive generation, and Southern Company Gas which provides natural gas utility and pipeline services. Southern Company’s geographic operations span primarily across Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and other parts of the Southeast, with Southern Power extending its renewable energy footprint across 15 states. Founded in 1945 and headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, Southern Company has recently completed significant projects including the expansion of Plant Vogtle with Units 3 and 4, marking the first new nuclear units built in the U.S. in over 30 years and making it the nation’s largest clean energy generator. In 2024, Southern Power brought its 30th solar facility online in Wyoming and expanded the Millers Branch Solar Facility in Texas to become its largest solar site with a total capacity of 512 MW. The company also partnered with General Motors to deploy a hydrogen fuel-cell truck fleet under a $65 million initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, aimed at promoting hydrogen as an alternative fuel. Additionally, Southern Company implemented a new Meter Data Management system in 2024 that centralizes and validates meter data for billing, analytics, and customer service enhancement as part of its broader customer modernization program. Southern Company remains focused on a broad and diverse energy strategy that includes advancing solar, wind, and nuclear energy while transitioning its generating fleet to cleaner sources to meet its goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The company serves approximately nine million customers and is investing over $48 billion through 2029 to support this transition, enhance transmission and distribution infrastructure, and accommodate increased demand driven by industrial growth, electric vehicle manufacturing, data centers, and renewable energy development. Southern Company maintains a strong commitment to sustainability, innovation, and community investment while delivering reliable, affordable energy solutions across its service territories. These efforts are reflected in its consistent dividend increases, with the annualized dividend raised to $2.86 per share in 2024, marking 76 consecutive years of dividend growth. Southern Company operates predominantly in the energy industry with segments in regulated electric and gas utilities, competitive power generation, and distributed energy solutions, targeting residential, commercial, industrial, and wholesale customers across its geographic footprint. The company emphasizes customer service, operational resilience, and environmental stewardship while pursuing strategic expansions and technological advancements to support evolving market demands and regulatory expectations. In summary, Southern Company is a diversified energy company offering electricity and gas services with a strong focus on clean energy expansion and customer-centric innovation, underscored by recent nuclear project completions, solar capacity growth, hydrogen fuel initiatives, and modernized data management systems that enhance operational efficiency and service delivery. It remains a major utility player in the U.S. Southeast with a strategic commitment to sustainability and long-term growth.
