Business
Sierra Rutile Holdings Limited operates as a mineral sands mining company focused on rutile production in southern Sierra Leone and ranks as the world's largest producer of natural rutile. The company mines, processes and sells high-grade, low-impurity rutile including standard grade rutile (SGR) for titanium pigment production in paints, laminates, plastics, inks, clothing, sunscreens and cosmetics; industrial grade rutile (IGR) for welding electrodes; ilmenite; zircon; and other mineral concentrates, with products also supplying titanium metal applications in aeronautics, medical implants, defense and sporting goods. It maintains established Area 1 operations in the Moyamba and Bonthe Districts alongside the advanced Sembehun project, one of the largest and highest-grade natural rutile deposits globally, supporting a potential mine life extension of at least 15 years; operations employ over 2,000 staff, positioning Sierra Rutile as one of Sierra Leone's largest private employers, with shipments directed to customers in North America, Europe and Asia from its Freetown headquarters, where mining activities trace back to 1967 and formal incorporation occurred in 1971. In 2024, Leonoil Company Limited acquired more than 90% of Sierra Rutile's shares following a competitive takeover process, completing compulsory acquisition and delisting from the Australian Securities Exchange on October 2, nearly doubling the initial offer value and establishing Sierra Rutile as a subsidiary of Leonoil; the company, previously demerged from Iluka Resources in 2022, continues to prioritize Sembehun development to reduce costs and extend mine life amid ongoing focus on corporate social responsibility in health, education, safety and community investment.
