Business
Summit Materials, Inc. Summit Materials, Inc. operates as a vertically integrated construction materials company that produces and supplies aggregates, cement, ready-mix concrete, asphalt paving mixes, and related services across the United States and British Columbia, Canada. The company serves public infrastructure, residential, and non-residential end markets through its operations in three primary segments—Cement, West, and East—including aggregates such as crushed stone, sand, and gravel; cement production for ready-mix producers and infrastructure projects; ready-mix concrete with customizable mix designs; asphalt for roadways and parking lots; paving and site preparation services; and materials services encompassing recycling, waste management, municipal waste landfills, and liquid asphalt terminals. Summit Materials, Inc. maintains a geographically diverse footprint with quarries, cement plants, ready-mix facilities, and distribution networks concentrated in high-growth regions along the Mississippi River from Minnesota to Louisiana and key markets in Texas, South Carolina, Missouri, and British Columbia; founded in 2009 and headquartered in Denver, Colorado, it employs approximately 5,300 people under CEO Anne Noonan. Recent major developments include the January 2024 acquisition of Argos USA for $3.2 billion, which doubled the company's size by adding four cement plants in Alabama, South Carolina, Florida, and West Virginia, two cement grinding facilities, and ready-mix operations across five states; a $38 million green technology expansion at its Davenport, Iowa cement plant in 2024 focused on alternative fuels and sustainability, marking the second major upgrade there in two years; and the completion in February 2025 of its acquisition by Quikrete Holdings, Inc. for $52.50 per share in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $11.5 billion enterprise value, positioning Summit Materials, Inc. as a privately held subsidiary within a broader North American construction materials platform that integrates Quikrete's packaged cementitious products, pavers, and engineered solutions. The company continues to emphasize sustainability through reduced emissions, recycled materials usage, and ESG initiatives like the RISE program for inclusion, alongside a history of over 50 acquisitions since inception to drive organic growth and market expansion.
