Business
Sanyo Special Steel Co., Ltd. manufactures and markets specialty steel products; bearing steel; engineering steel; stainless steel; heat-resistant steel; and tool steel; together with metal powders and powder metallurgy products; formed and fabricated materials from special steel bars and tubes; and information processing services. The company, founded in 1935 and headquartered in Himeji, Hyogo, Japan, operates through its Steel Products; Metal Powders; Formed and Fabricated Materials; and Others segments, serving industries including automobiles; industrial machinery; railroads; construction equipment; wind power; aerospace; ships; power plants; medical equipment; PCs; and smartphones. Products find applications globally in bearings; gears; shafts; valves; molds; steel pipes for boilers and chemical plants; thermal spraying; 3D printing; cutting tools; and electromagnetic wave absorbers. As a subsidiary of Nippon Steel Corporation, Sanyo maintains manufacturing sites in Japan; Sweden and Finland via wholly-owned subsidiary Ovako AB; India through 100%-owned Sanyo Special Steel Manufacturing India Pvt. Ltd. (SSMI); Thailand; China; Mexico; and the United States. In 2024, Sanyo secured Competition Commission of India approval to acquire an additional 15.43% stake in SSMI from Mitsui & Co., achieving full ownership. Nippon Steel Corporation launches a tender offer in February 2025 valued at approximately 70.5 billion yen to acquire all remaining shares, transforming Sanyo into a wholly-owned subsidiary by April 2025 via two-tier process including squeeze-out, to enhance synergies in production; technology; global expansion; and carbon neutrality initiatives. Recent advancements include commercialization of high-carbon steel TOUGHFIT with improved hardness-toughness balance; ECOMAX5 steel for simplified parts manufacturing; high-purity spherical silicon powder; and metal powders for die-casting molds with superior thermal conductivity; alongside SBT certification for GHG reduction targets; solar power commencement at Himeji Works; and TPG certification as supplier for wind turbine components.
