Business
UnitedHealth Group Incorporated is a diversified health and well-being company primarily engaged in health benefits and health services. It operates through two main platforms: UnitedHealthcare, which provides a full range of health benefit plans including employer-sponsored, individual and family plans, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Part D, Medicare Supplement, and community and state healthcare benefits; and Optum, which encompasses healthcare delivery, pharmacy care services, and technology-enabled health services. UnitedHealthcare serves more than 40 million individuals across the United States, while Optum operates in multiple segments including OptumHealth, OptumInsight, and OptumRx, offering services such as care delivery, data analytics, pharmacy benefit management, and health care operations. UnitedHealth Group's product offerings include health insurance plans for employers, individuals, Medicare beneficiaries, and state-based programs; pharmacy benefit management services; healthcare delivery via clinics and ambulatory care; and data and consulting services aimed at improving healthcare quality and cost efficiency. The company also offers specialty services including home health, hospice, and chronic care management through various subsidiaries. In recent major developments, UnitedHealth Group closed its $3.3 billion acquisition of Amedisys, a leader in home health and hospice care, enhancing its position in value-based care and home health services. It agreed to sell its last South American business, Banmedica, to Brazilian private equity firm Patria Investments for $1 billion, reflecting a strategic refocus on core markets. UnitedHealth also continues to invest in technology and care innovations while managing regulatory challenges and increased medical costs across its insurance lines. The company extended grant partnerships for maternal and infant health programs as part of its community care focus and has experienced shifts in its Medicare Advantage and Optum Health operations to optimize profitability and service delivery. Founded in 1977 and headquartered in Minnetonka, Minnesota, UnitedHealth Group has a broad geographic reach primarily across the United States with selective international operations. It serves a diverse customer base including employers, government programs, individuals, and providers, maintaining a complex organizational structure with nearly 2,700 subsidiaries supporting multiple healthcare and insurance operations globally. The company remains one of the largest healthcare conglomerates by revenue and market presence. UnitedHealth Group continues to leverage its integrated platform model combining insurance and health services to enhance care delivery, improve health outcomes, and control costs, positioning itself as a pivotal player in the evolving healthcare industry landscape as of 2025.
