Business
Vale S.A., the world's largest producer of iron ore and nickel, produces and exports iron ore fines and pellets, nickel and its by-products including gold, silver, cobalt and precious metals, copper concentrate, manganese and ferroalloys; it also operates integrated logistics via railways including Estrada de Ferro Carajás and Vitória a Minas, ports such as Ponta da Madeira and Tubarão, and ships including very large ore carriers, alongside energy generation from hydroelectric, solar and wind sources primarily for its operations. Founded in 1942 and headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the company conducts mining and logistics activities in over 30 countries with primary operations in Brazil, Canada, Indonesia and other regions serving steelmakers, electric vehicle battery manufacturers and industrial customers globally. Recent developments include securing an operating license in September 2025 for the Serra Sul +20 Mtpy expansion project at the S11D mine with $2.8 billion investment to boost iron ore capacity by 20 million tons annually, advancing the Vargem Grande and Capanema reactivation projects to add 30 million tons of production, partnering with Glencore in December 2025 on a Sudbury copper project targeting 880 thousand tons output over 21 years with up to $2 billion capex, spinning out Vale Base Metals in 2023-2024 with equity investment diluting Vale's stake to 90%, and divesting non-core assets such as its 40% interest in Mineração Rio do Norte bauxite in 2023 and 50% in Companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém steel in 2023.
