Business
Vodafone Group Public Limited Company (VOD) is a British multinational telecommunications company that provides mobile connectivity, fixed-line broadband, voice, data, messaging, and digital television services; offers Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, cloud computing, unified communications, cybersecurity, and enterprise managed services through Vodafone Business; and delivers fintech and mobile financial services including the M-PESA platform serving millions in Africa. The company operates its own mobile networks in 15 countries and fixed networks in 21 countries across Europe and Africa, with partner networks in 46 additional markets, serving over 330 million mobile customers, 27 million fixed broadband customers, 22 million TV customers, and 118 million IoT connections; it leads Europe in 5G deployment as the continent's largest mobile and fixed network operator. Founded in 1984 and headquartered in Newbury, Berkshire, England, Vodafone targets consumer, small business, and large corporate customers including major enterprises such as Deutsche Post, Unilever, and Volkswagen Group. Vodafone recently completed the merger of its UK operations with Three UK on May 31, 2025, forming VodafoneThree—a 51%-owned joint venture that plans £11 billion in 5G network investments over 10 years, £1.3 billion in the first year, and £700 million annual synergies by year five to enhance coverage and standalone 5G capabilities. Through its subsidiary Vodacom, Vodafone agreed in December 2025 to acquire a controlling 20% stake in Kenya's Safaricom for €1.81 billion, including purchases from the Kenyan government and Vodafone itself, pending regulatory approvals for closure in Q1 2026, strengthening its African telecom and M-PESA fintech presence. The company pursues innovations including collaborations with Amazon's Project Kuiper for satellite LEO communications, AST SpaceMobile for space-based 5G, IBM on quantum computing, and Open RAN deployments in Europe.
