In February 2025, Western Digital completed the separation of its Flash business into independent publicly traded Sandisk Corporation, formerly a wholly owned subsidiary, positioning WD as a standalone HDD-focused storage-infrastructure company. In February 2026, the Company rebranded as WD and announced an AI-oriented technology and platform roadmap, including a 40TB UltraSMR ePMR HDD in hyperscaler qualification with anticipated volume production in the second half of 2026; a path to 60TB ePMR and 100TB-plus heat-assisted magnetic recording HDDs; High Bandwidth Drive and Dual Pivot technologies intended to increase HDD throughput and sequential I/O performance; power-optimized HDDs targeted for customer qualification in 2027; and an open-API intelligent software layer designed to extend hyperscale storage economics to cloud and enterprise customers operating at 200 petabytes or more.
