Business
Western Digital Corporation, doing business as WD, is a United States-based developer and manufacturer of data-storage infrastructure, focused principally on hard disk drive (HDD) technologies for cloud, enterprise, client-device and consumer applications. The Company designs, develops, manufactures, markets and sells high-capacity HDDs and integrated storage platforms, including nearline HDDs for hyperscale cloud and data-center operators; enterprise-class HDDs for servers and storage systems; client-compute HDDs for desktop and notebook PCs; surveillance and video-storage drives; and external, portable and desktop storage products. Its product portfolio includes Ultrastar data-center HDDs, WD Gold enterprise HDDs, WD Red NAS drives, WD Purple surveillance HDDs, WD Blue client HDDs, WD Black performance and gaming drives, WD Elements external-storage products, My Book desktop storage, My Passport portable drives, and related storage platforms, software and support services. The Company serves hyperscale cloud providers, cloud-service providers, original equipment manufacturers, system integrators, distributors, enterprises, small and medium-sized businesses, content creators, gamers and retail consumers globally. WD operates internationally, with sales, engineering, manufacturing, supply-chain and support activities across the Americas, Asia-Pacific and Europe, the Middle East and Africa; its principal executive offices are in San Jose, California. Founded in 1970, the Company is incorporated in Delaware and trades on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol WDC. In February 2025, Western Digital completed the separation of its Flash business into independent publicly traded Sandisk Corporation, formerly a wholly owned subsidiary, positioning WD as a standalone HDD-focused storage-infrastructure company. In February 2026, the Company rebranded as WD and announced an AI-oriented technology and platform roadmap, including a 40TB UltraSMR ePMR HDD in hyperscaler qualification with anticipated volume production in the second half of 2026; a path to 60TB ePMR and 100TB-plus heat-assisted magnetic recording HDDs; High Bandwidth Drive and Dual Pivot technologies intended to increase HDD throughput and sequential I/O performance; power-optimized HDDs targeted for customer qualification in 2027; and an open-API intelligent software layer designed to extend hyperscale storage economics to cloud and enterprise customers operating at 200 petabytes or more.
