Business
Western Forest Products Inc. is a Canadian softwood forest products company engaged in timber harvesting, reforestation, forest management, sawmilling logs into lumber and wood chips, value-added lumber remanufacturing, and wholesaling of purchased lumber products. The company manufactures and sells an extensive range of appearance, engineered, structural, and industrial wood products, including premium species such as Western Red Cedar, Yellow Cedar, Douglas Fir, and Hemlock for outdoor living applications like decking and siding; interior living products for design and finishing; exterior appearance items such as soffits, fascia, trim, and paneling; and engineered solutions for residential, commercial, and industrial uses including architectural, structural, and glulam remanufacturing. Its operations encompass six sawmills with annual lumber capacity exceeding 1.1 billion board feet, two value-added remanufacturing plants, and timberland management with an annual allowable cut of approximately 6.2 million cubic meters primarily from Crown lands on Vancouver Island and the British Columbia coastal mainland, supplemented by private timberlands; products are marketed to over 25 countries including the United States, Japan, China, and Europe. Founded in 1955 and headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, the company maintains operations across coastal British Columbia and Washington State, with all forests under its care certified to internationally recognized standards and a commitment to planting three trees for every one harvested. Recent developments include the formation of a limited partnership in early 2024 with Tlowitsis, We Wai Kai, Wei Wai Kum, and K’ómoks First Nations, through which the nations acquired a 34% interest in Western's Mid-Island Forest Operations covering 157,000 hectares near Campbell River and Sayward for $35.9 million, supported by a long-term fibre supply agreement; implementation of a share consolidation in 2025; establishment of a new US$30 million bilateral letter of credit facility; and ongoing investor activity highlighted by Kernwood Limited increasing its stake to 16.42% as of October 2025, alongside lumber production curtailments amid market challenges.
