Whitehaven Coal Limited develops, operates and markets metallurgical and high-calorific-value thermal coal mines in New South Wales and Queensland, Australia. Founded in 1999 and headquartered in Sydney, the company produces premium low-ash, low-sulphur thermal coal for high-efficiency, low-emissions power stations; hard coking metallurgical coal for steelmaking; and semi-soft coking coal, with products exported primarily to Asia including Japan, India, Taiwan, Malaysia, Korea, Indonesia, China, Vietnam and Europe. Whitehaven operates six mines comprising five open-cut operations--Boggabri, Maules Creek, Tarrawonga, Daunia and Blackwater--and one large underground mine at Narrabri in the Gunnedah and Bowen basins; it transports coal via rail to ports such as Newcastle, Hay Point and Gladstone for seaborne shipment, supported by offices in Sydney, Newcastle, Gunnedah, Brisbane and Tokyo. In April 2024, Whitehaven completed the transformational acquisition of BHP's Daunia and Blackwater metallurgical coal mines in Queensland's Bowen Basin for an upfront US$2.1 billion plus deferred and contingent payments, doubling managed production capacity to 35-39.5 million tonnes of run-of-mine coal in FY25 and pivoting the portfolio toward 70% metallurgical coal sales. In August 2024, the company agreed to sell a 30% stake in Blackwater to Nippon Steel and JFE Steel for US$1.08 billion, incorporating long-term offtake arrangements and expected to complete in Q1 CY25; Werris Creek transitioned to rehabilitation in Q4 FY24 while early mining commenced at the Vickery development project, with first coal sold in June 2024.
