Business
American Electric Power Company, Inc. (AEP) operates as a leading electric utility holding company engaged in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity to approximately 5.6 million customers across 11 states in the United States. The company owns nearly 38,000 megawatts of generating capacity, including coal, natural gas, nuclear, wind, solar, and hydroelectric facilities; maintains the nation's largest electricity transmission system spanning nearly 39,000 miles with extensive 765 kV ultra-high voltage lines; and delivers power through vertically integrated utilities, transmission and distribution operations, and generation and marketing segments. Its core operating subsidiaries include AEP Ohio, AEP Texas, Appalachian Power serving Virginia, West Virginia, and Tennessee, Indiana Michigan Power, Kentucky Power, Public Service Company of Oklahoma, and Southwestern Electric Power Company covering Arkansas, Louisiana, and east Texas. Founded in 1906 and headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, AEP serves residential, commercial, industrial, and wholesale customers primarily in the Midwest, South, and Southwest regions, with its transmission network supporting about 10% of electricity demand in the Eastern Interconnection and 11% in ERCOT. In recent developments, AEP completed the sale of a 19.9% minority stake in its Ohio and Indiana Michigan transmission companies to KKR and PSP Investments for $2.82 billion in June 2025, bolstering its $72 billion five-year capital plan focused on transmission, distribution, renewables, and grid enhancements to meet surging demand including data centers. The company also announced long-term strategic agreements with Quanta Services in November 2025 to advance high-voltage transmission projects and supply chain resilience, alongside ongoing investments in renewable generation such as wind farms and energy storage to support clean energy transition goals.
