Business
Koninklijke Ahold Delhaize N.V. is a leading multinational food retail and wholesale holding company that operates supermarkets, convenience stores, hypermarkets, online grocery and non-food platforms, pharmacies, and liquor stores through 16 local brands serving 72 million customers weekly. The company offers a wide range of grocery products, private-label items, fresh produce, ready-made meals, health and convenience options, and e-commerce services via platforms like bol.com; its key brands include Albert Heijn, Etos, Gall & Gall, and Delhaize in the Netherlands and Belgium; Albert, Alfa-Beta, and ENA in the Czech Republic and Greece; Mega Image and Profi in Romania; Maxi in Serbia; Super Indo in Indonesia (joint venture); Food Lion, Giant Food Stores, Hannaford, Stop & Shop, and The Giant Company in the United States; and Delhaize in Luxembourg. Headquartered in Zaandam, Netherlands, and formed in 2016 through the merger of Ahold (founded 1887) and Delhaize Group (founded 1867), it employs around 393,000 people across approximately 9,400 stores and specialty outlets in nine countries, with the United States generating two-thirds of revenue, followed by robust operations in Europe and joint ventures in Indonesia and Portugal. In recent developments, Ahold Delhaize completed the €1.3 billion acquisition of Romanian retailer Profi Rom Food SRL from MidEuropa in early 2025, adding over 1,800 stores and bolstering its Eastern European presence with plans for accelerated expansion; this contributed 3.6 percentage points to Q3 2025 net sales growth at constant rates. The company integrated Profi operations swiftly, reconfirmed its 2025 outlook with underlying operating margin around 4%, free cash flow of at least €2.2 billion, and gross capital expenditures of €2.7 billion, alongside announcing a €1 billion share buyback starting in 2026. Additional strategic moves include partnerships with Danone North America and The Nature Conservancy to reduce methane emissions in yogurt production, following collaborations with Kellanova, General Mills, and Campbell's Soup; U.S. supply chain enhancements like a new North Carolina distribution center; European store expansions such as eight new Delhaize Belgium supermarkets in early 2026; and AI-driven innovations like Albert Heijn's personal assistant "Steijn" for personalized shopping.
