Business
Akebia Therapeutics, Inc. is a fully integrated biopharmaceutical company focused on developing and commercializing novel therapeutics for people with kidney disease. The company manufactures and markets a portfolio of primarily oral therapies including Auryxia (ferric citrate), indicated for control of serum phosphorus levels in adult patients with dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease and for treatment of iron deficiency anemia in non-dialysis-dependent CKD patients; and Vafseo (vadadustat), an oral hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase (HIF-PH) inhibitor approved in Japan and launched in the U.S. for treating anemia associated with chronic kidney disease. Akebia’s operations mainly serve the United States and international markets, targeting patients with kidney disease and related complications. Founded in 2007 and headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the company also advances a pipeline of HIF-PH inhibitors and other kidney disease therapeutics in preclinical and clinical development. Recent significant changes include the U.S. commercial launch of Vafseo with broad contracts covering nearly 100% of U.S. dialysis patients through agreements with major dialysis organizations, positioning the drug as a potential new standard of care for anemia in CKD. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services granted Transitional Drug Add-On Payment Adjustment (TDAPA) reimbursement for Vafseo, supporting market uptake. In 2025, Akebia expanded its rare kidney disease pipeline by acquiring global rights to ADX-097 (renamed AKB-097) from Q32 Bio, marking a strategic expansion beyond anemia therapies. Additionally, the company extended its supply agreement with STA Pharmaceutical through 2032 and completed executive management changes, including the appointment of a new Chief Financial Officer. Akebia continues to focus on label expansion for Vafseo into the non-dialysis CKD population, representing a significant market growth opportunity.
