- Philly Shipyard ASA is an investment holding company focused on maritime operations and listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange under the ticker PHLY, with OTC quotation as AKRRF. The company, founded in 1997 and headquartered in Oslo, Norway, previously owned Philly Shipyard, Inc., a commercial shipyard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, that constructed and repaired ocean-going merchant vessels compliant with the U.S. Jones Act, including containerships such as the CV 2600 class for Matson Navigation; product tankers; Aframax tankers; national security multi-mission vessels; and training vessels for the U.S. Maritime Administration. The shipyard, operational since 1998, delivered approximately 50% of all large U.S. Jones Act commercial vessels since 2000 and also pursued maintenance, repair, overhaul, and conversion projects along with steel fabrication.
Philly Shipyard ASA operates as a subsidiary of Aker Capital AS, which is wholly owned by Aker ASA, a Norwegian industrial investment company. Its primary activities historically centered on the U.S. commercial and government shipbuilding markets through its former operating subsidiary, targeting customers in domestic maritime trade, energy transportation, and national security sectors.
In July 2024, Philly Shipyard ASA signed a share purchase agreement with Hanwha Systems and Hanwha Ocean to divest its operating subsidiary Philly Shipyard, Inc. for $100 million, with the transaction closing in December 2024; the subsidiary now operates as Hanwha Philly Shipyard. Philly Shipyard ASA was delisted from Euronext Expand Oslo on September 10, 2025, following the divestiture, and is reportedly in the process of liquidation. Hanwha has since announced a $5 billion investment plan for the Philadelphia facility to expand production capacity for LNG carriers, naval modules, and vessels, including new docks and automation upgrades.
