Akoustis Technologies, Inc. designs, develops, manufactures, and sells radio frequency (RF) filter products primarily using proprietary bulk acoustic wave (BAW) technology with single-crystal piezoelectric materials. Its core product offerings include high-performance RF filters and amplifiers for mobile wireless devices such as smartphones and tablets; cellular infrastructure equipment; Wi-Fi access points, including 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands; customer premise equipment; and military and defense applications. Additionally, through its subsidiaries, Akoustis provides complementary surface acoustic wave resonators, crystal resonators, oscillators, and ceramic products. The company also operates a Fabrication Services segment offering engineering review and backend packaging services, along with advanced semiconductor back-end supply chain services such as wafer thinning, polishing, and automated inspection. Akoustis operates globally, serving markets across the Americas, Asia, and Europe. It maintains a 125,000 square-foot ISO-9001:2015 certified wafer fabrication and packaging facility in Canandaigua, New York, which includes class 100 and class 1000 cleanroom environments designed for 150 mm wafer processing. Founded in 2013 and headquartered in Huntersville, North Carolina, Akoustis aims to address performance challenges in RF front-end filtering by delivering ultra-wideband, high-frequency, and high-power solutions to meet the demands of expanding 5G, Wi-Fi, automotive, industrial, and defense sectors. In the last two years, Akoustis has undergone significant strategic expansions including the acquisition of RF Mi and GDSI, which broadened its product portfolio into surface acoustic wave resonators and advanced back-end semiconductor processing services. Notably, the company launched its XP3F technology targeting frequencies from 8 to 20 GHz and beyond to reshape the RF filter market. In 2024, Akoustis announced leadership changes with the appointment of Kamran Cheema as CEO. Concurrently, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December 2024 to facilitate reorganization and strategic sale efforts amid legal and financial challenges. It also pursued a reverse stock split and direct stock offering to manage Nasdaq listing compliance and raise capital. Throughout this period, Akoustis continued commercial volume shipments of its XBAW filters for 5G and Wi-Fi markets, securing major orders including a $13 million contract for Wi-Fi access point filters, reinforcing its position in the wireless communications industry.
