Business
Alico, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALCO) is a Florida-based agribusiness and land management company that owns and manages approximately 49,537 acres of land across eight Florida counties, including Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands, and Polk, plus approximately 44,700 acres of oil, gas, and mineral rights throughout the state; the company operates through two primary segments, Alico Citrus and Land Management and Other Operations. Alico Citrus engages in planting, owning, cultivating, and/or managing citrus groves to produce fruit, primarily oranges such as Hamlin and Valencia varieties for sale to processed and fresh citrus markets, as well as purchasing and reselling fruit and providing value-added services including contracting for harvesting, marketing, and hauling; Land Management and Other Operations encompasses leasing land for grazing, hunting, farming, conservation, and mining activities, rock mining royalties, native plant sales, and management of unimproved native pastureland and improved farmland. Founded in 1960 and headquartered in Fort Myers, Florida, the company targets juice processors, fresh fruit packers, agricultural operators, conservation groups, real estate developers, and government agencies, with operations concentrated in central and southwest Florida. In a major strategic shift announced January 6, 2025, Alico initiated a Strategic Transformation to substantially wind down its Alico Citrus division after the 2024-2025 harvest due to challenges from citrus greening disease and environmental factors, terminating its key supply contracts with Tropicana in May 2025, reducing its workforce by up to 172 employees through May 2025, and pivoting to diversified agricultural operations and real estate development on approximately 25% of its land holdings while maintaining 75% for farming and leasing; during fiscal 2025 ended September 30, 2025, the company sold 2,796 acres of citrus and ranch land for $23.8 million, recognizing a gain of $20.3 million, and in September 2025 amended its credit agreement with MetLife to add $10 million in fixed-rate borrowings, retiring Prudential debt and extending maturities to 2034.
