Business
Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (AMCC), a fabless semiconductor company founded in 1979 and headquartered in Santa Clara, California, develops and provides silicon solutions for cloud infrastructure, data centers, and connectivity products for edge, metro, and long-haul communications equipment internationally. The company offers computing products including the X-Gene family of ARMv8 64-bit server processors targeting hyperscale, telco, enterprise, and high-performance computing applications; embedded computing solutions such as the HeliX family of ARM 64-bit processors and PowerPC-based products for wireless access points, residential gateways, network switches, routers, and multi-function printers; and connectivity products encompassing networking physical layer devices (PHYs), mixed-signal devices, optical transport network framers and mappers, and the X-Weave family for service providers, public cloud, private cloud, and enterprise data centers. AMCC operates in the semiconductors industry, serving telecommunications, industrial and defense, data storage, and networking segments with customers including equipment manufacturers for wide area networks, storage area networks, and high-growth enterprise and consumer markets. In January 2017, AMCC was acquired by MACOM Technology Solutions Holdings Inc. for approximately $770 million in a cash-and-stock transaction, integrating its connectivity and optical transport portfolio into MACOM's RF, microwave, millimeterwave, and photonic semiconductor offerings while MACOM divested AMCC's compute business shortly thereafter to focus on core synergies in data center interconnects and high-margin markets. No significant operational changes, new product launches, or strategic shifts for the standalone AMCC entity have occurred since the acquisition, with its technologies now contributing to MACOM's expanded data center and telecom solutions.
