Headquartered in Thousand Oaks, California, the company was founded in 1980 as Applied Molecular Genetics and pioneered the biotechnology industry with recombinant DNA technology. Amgen operates globally with manufacturing facilities in the United States, Ireland, Puerto Rico, Singapore, the Netherlands and other locations, serving patients through wholesalers and healthcare providers. The company's principal products include Prolia and Xgeva (denosumab) for osteoporosis and bone diseases; Enbrel (etanercept) for autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and plaque psoriasis; Repatha (evolocumab) for hyperlipidemia; Otezla (apremilast) for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis; Tepezza (teprotumumab) for Graves' ophthalmopathy; Evenity (romosozumab) for osteoporosis; Kyprolis (carfilzomib) for multiple myeloma; Nplate (romiplostim) for thrombocytopenia; Aranesp (darbepoetin alfa) for anemia; Neulasta (pegfilgrastim) and Neupogen (filgrastim) for neutropenia; Epogen (epoetin alfa) for anemia; Aimovig (erenumab) for migraine; Blincyto (blinatumomab) for acute lymphoblastic leukemia; Lumakras (sotorasib) for KRAS G12C-mutated non-small cell lung cancer; Tezspire (tezepelumab) for severe asthma; Vectibix (panitumumab) for colorectal cancer; Parsabiv (etelcalcetide) for secondary hyperparathyroidism; biosimilars such as Amjevita (adalimumab), Mvasi (bevacizumab), Kanjinti (trastuzumab), Riabni (rituximab) and Avsola (infliximab); and rare disease therapies including Krystexxa (pegloticase), Uplizna (inebilizumab) and Tavneos (avacopan). Amgen maintains a robust pipeline with 17 Phase III programs, including MariTide (maridebart cafraglutide), an investigational once-monthly anti-obesity therapy; Imdelltra (tarlatamab), a bispecific T-cell engager for extensive-stage small cell lung cancer; and advancements in oncology, cardiovascular and rare disease areas. Recent developments include major manufacturing expansions with a $650 million investment at its Juncos, Puerto Rico facility announced in September 2025 to enhance biologics production and create nearly 750 jobs; a $900 million expansion at its New Albany, Ohio biomanufacturing plant in April 2025; a $600 million Center for Science and Innovation at its Thousand Oaks headquarters broken ground in October 2025; and a $1 billion project at its Holly Springs, North Carolina site. In August 2025, Royalty Pharma acquired a royalty interest in Amgen's Imdelltra from BeOne Medicines for $885 million upfront. The company strengthened its portfolio through acquisitions including Horizon Therapeutics for $27.8 billion in 2023 adding Tepezza, Krystexxa and Uplizna; ChemoCentryx for $3.7 billion in 2022 adding Tavneos; and others such as Otezla from Celgene in 2019. Amgen continues collaborations like those with Kyowa Kirin, AstraZeneca and Generate Biomedicines, while advancing AI partnerships with Amazon Web Services for drug discovery announced in 2023.
