Business
Associated British Foods plc (ABF) is a diversified international food processing, ingredients and retailing company headquartered in London and founded in 1935. The company operates through five principal segments: Grocery, which manufactures and markets branded and private label products including hot beverages such as Twinings tea and Ovaltine, sugar and sweeteners under Silver Spoon, vegetable oils, bread and baked goods via Kingsmill and Allied Bakeries, cereals like Jordans and Ryvita, ethnic foods, meat products, balsamic vinegar and household staples such as Allinson yeast and Karo syrup; Sugar, which produces sugar beet and cane-based products primarily in the UK, Spain, Africa and China; Agriculture, which manufactures specialty feed ingredients, premixes, compound animal feeds and related services; Ingredients, which supplies bakers' yeast under brands like Fleischmann's, bakery ingredients, enzymes, lipids, yeast extracts and cereal specialties to food, feed and pharmaceutical industries; and Retail, which trades value clothing, footwear, accessories, homeware and skincare through the Primark chain with around 19.5 million square feet of selling space across approximately 560 stores and franchise operations. ABF employs 138,000 people and generates revenue of £20.1 billion from operations in 56 countries across Europe, the Americas, Australia, Africa and Asia, serving retail, wholesale, foodservice, industrial and agricultural customers; it is a subsidiary of Wittington Investments Limited. In recent developments, ABF agreed in August 2025 to acquire Hovis Group from Endless LLP for £75 million to merge with its Allied Bakeries unit, creating the UK's largest bread business with anticipated annual cost savings of £50 million, subject to regulatory approval; the company also closed its Vivergo bioethanol plant and restructured its Spanish sugar operations to improve profitability amid low European sugar prices; additionally, in November 2025, ABF announced a strategic review that may lead to a separation of its Primark retail business from its food operations, conducted in consultation with majority shareholder Wittington Investments and advised by Rothschild & Co.
