Business
Ashland Inc. operates as a global additives and specialty ingredients company serving consumer and industrial markets. The company manufactures and supplies a diverse portfolio of products, including specialty additives for architectural coatings, construction, energy, and automotive markets; life sciences products such as pharmaceuticals, nutrition, agricultural chemicals, and diagnostic films; personal care offerings encompassing biofunctionals, microbial protectants, skin care, sun care, oral care, and hair care solutions; and intermediates such as 1,4-butanediol (BDO) and related chemical derivatives. Ashland's Specialty Ingredients segment provides cellulose ethers, vinyl pyrrolidones, biofunctionals, and various polymers used in adhesives, coatings, pharmaceuticals, textiles, food and beverages, and nutraceuticals. Its consumer specialties division delivers products for oral care, hair care, skin care, and home care, while its industrial specialties serve packaging, automotive, and industrial applications. Founded in 2004 and headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware, Ashland operates across North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia Pacific, with about 3,000 employees. The company focuses on higher-margin, resilient end markets through portfolio refinement and divestitures to streamline operations. Recently, Ashland completed the sale of its Avoca business in March 2025, aligning with its strategy to prioritize core specialty ingredients businesses. The company is pursuing restructuring and manufacturing optimization initiatives, including consolidating manufacturing operations and improving process productivity. Innovation is a key growth driver, with an ambitious plan to launch seven new products in 2025, targeting incremental sales growth through new and improved specialty ingredients, particularly in life sciences and personal care. Ashland reported double-digit growth in personal care sales driven by strong demand in skin and hair care sectors while managing challenges from customer destocking and structural market changes, especially in China. The company maintains a strong liquidity position with $300 million in cash and a total liquidity of $896 million as of late 2024. Its strategic focus includes expanding high-growth, sustainable, and biologics-related specialty ingredients, aiming to enhance profitability and generate significant sales improvements by 2027 through continuous innovation and operational efficiency enhancements. Ashland's long-term strategy emphasizes profitable growth via innovation, portfolio optimization, and manufacturing excellence to support its global footprint and diverse market presence.
