Business
Astra Space, Inc. is an American aerospace company that designs, manufactures, tests and operates dedicated orbital launch services for small satellites and electric propulsion systems for spacecraft, primarily targeting satellite operators, manufacturers and government agencies in the United States. The company offers launch services from Pacific Spaceport Complex in Kodiak, Alaska, and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida using its Rocket 4 launch vehicle, which features a first stage powered by in-house Chiron engines and a second stage with Ursa Major Hadley engines, delivering up to 600 kg to low Earth orbit; space products including the flight-proven Astra Spacecraft Engine, a Hall-effect thruster system comprising thruster, power processing unit, tank and feed system available as fully assembled units or components in the Astra Propulsion Kit, with extensive on-orbit heritage exceeding 600 burns. Founded in 2016 and headquartered in Alameda, California, Astra achieved its first orbital launch in 2021 and went public on Nasdaq that year before its founders, Chris Kemp and Adam London, completed a take-private transaction in July 2024 at an $11.25 million valuation to refocus on development; recent developments include completing the Rocket 4 production line in May 2023, securing a U.S. Department of Defense contract valued up to $44 million in October 2024 via the Defense Innovation Unit for tactically responsive launch prototyping, and raising a $50 million capital round to enable Rocket 4 flights and positive free cash flow.
