Business
Minerva S.A. (BEEF3.SA) is a leading South American exporter of fresh beef, live cattle, and by-products, operating 25 slaughterhouses across Brazil (10 units), Paraguay (five), Uruguay (three), Argentina (five), and Colombia (two) with a combined daily cattle slaughter capacity of 26,380 head; it also maintains meat processing plants including Minerva Fine Foods in Brazil for cooked frozen products and Swift Argentina plants for beef, pork, and poultry processing with capacities of 162 and 55 tons per day respectively, alongside offerings of chilled, frozen, and processed meats such as hormone-free pasture-raised lamb under the Sovereign brand and convenient ready-to-eat products under the PUL brand, as well as veal cuts including tenderloin, chops, shank, and cutlets; the company exports to over 100 countries across five continents via 15 sales offices and 14 distribution centers (nine in Brazil), trades in electric power, food products, carbon credits, third-party brands like Swift, and animal by-products including meat/bone meal, blood, and tallow, while breeding and selling live cattle, lambs, pigs, and other animals. Founded by the Vilela de Queiroz family with cattle raising and logistics in 1957 and industrial operations beginning in 1992 upon acquiring its first slaughterhouse in Barretos, São Paulo—its current headquarters—Minerva operates primarily in the beef industry with segments in live cattle exports and other proteins, targeting wholesale, retail, and foodservice customers globally including major markets in China, North America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. In October 2024, the company completed its largest-ever acquisition for BRL 7.5 billion, purchasing 13 cattle and sheep slaughter/deboning plants plus a distribution center in Brazil from Marfrig Global Foods following CADE approval, expanding its Brazilian slaughter capacity to 22,336 head per day across 21 plants and reinforcing its position as South America's top beef exporter with enhanced synergies, market arbitrage, and access to key international destinations; this follows prior expansions like the 2017 JBS Mercosur acquisition and includes ongoing initiatives such as J.P. Morgan Payments partnership for working capital optimization, MyCarbon subsidiary advancements in carbon credits across 145,700 hectares, and investment in The EVERY Company's precision fermentation for egg proteins.
