Founded through the 1999 merger of British Aerospace and Marconi Electronic Systems, the company maintains its headquarters and registered office at 6 Carlton Gardens, London, SW1Y 5AD, United Kingdom. It serves governments, militaries and security forces as a prime contractor and systems integrator, with key subsidiaries including BAE Systems Inc. in the US and joint ventures such as Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) and the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) with Leonardo and Japan. In recent developments, BAE Systems plc completed its largest acquisition with the $5.6 billion purchase of Ball Aerospace in February 2024, establishing the Space & Mission Systems segment for spacecraft, payloads and optical systems, supported by a $4.8 billion bond issuance. The company launched OneArc in December 2025, consolidating acquisitions of Bohemia Interactive Simulations, TerraSim and Pitch Technologies to deliver integrated military training and simulation capabilities. Additional strategic moves include a minority investment in QinetiQ's electronic warfare business, partnerships with Rheinmetall and Leonardo, a £3.95 billion AUKUS submarine contract, and $390 million for Bradley A4 production.
