Big 5 Sporting Goods Corporation (BGFV) operates as a value-oriented sporting goods retailer offering a broad assortment of name-brand and private-label products including athletic shoes, apparel and accessories; outdoor and athletic equipment for team sports, fitness, camping, hunting, fishing, tennis, golf, winter and summer recreation, and roller sports. The company maintains approximately 424 stores averaging 12,000 square feet each, primarily in 11 western U.S. states such as California, Nevada, Arizona, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, New Mexico, Texas, and others, targeting recreational athletes, families, and value-conscious consumers. Founded in 1955 as United Merchandising Corp. in Culver City, California, and headquartered in El Segundo, California, Big 5 specializes in full-line sporting goods retail with a focus on competitive pricing and convenient brick-and-mortar locations supported by e-commerce. In October 2025, Big 5 completed a $112.7 million merger with a partnership of Worldwide Golf, a nationwide golf equipment retailer, and Capitol Hill Group, a private investment firm, under which Big 5 survives as a wholly owned subsidiary to leverage enhanced capital and strategic expertise for growth and operational re-energization; stockholders received $1.45 per share in cash. The company also renewed its five-year revolving credit facility with Bank of America in December 2024, providing up to $150 million in committed availability expandable to $200 million through December 2029.
