- Societatea Nationala de Gaze Naturale Romgaz S.A. (Romgaz) is Romania's largest natural gas producer and primary supplier, engaged in the exploration, production, underground storage, and marketing of natural gas, as well as electricity generation and well workover services. Founded in 1909 and headquartered in Mediaș, Sibiu County, Romania, the company is majority-owned by the Romanian State through the Ministry of Energy and operates primarily across the Transylvanian Basin, Moldavian Platform, Muntenia, Oltenia, and the Black Sea continental shelf.
The company operates through integrated business segments covering Natural Gas Exploration and Production, Underground Gas Storage, Electricity Generation, and Specialized Well Services. Its systematic portfolio of products and services includes: geological exploration, reservoir appraisal, and seismic surveying of onshore and offshore hydrocarbon basins; extraction, dehydration, separation, and compression of pipeline-quality natural gas and associated gas condensates; wholesale and retail marketing, supply, and trading of natural gas to industrial consumers, thermal power plants, regional distribution network operators, and retail suppliers; underground natural gas storage services, including storage capacity reservation, seasonal gas injection, conditioning, and withdrawal services managed through its wholly owned subsidiary S.N.G.N. Romgaz S.A. - Filiala de Inmagazinare Gaze Naturale Depogaz Ploiesti S.R.L.; electric power generation, transmission-grid balancing, and ancillary electrical services via natural gas-fired thermal power units; and specialized well intervention, workover, downhole repair, cementing, and well rehabilitation services provided through its specialized technical service divisions.
In recent developments, Romgaz has significantly accelerated its strategic expansion into offshore upstream assets and modernized power infrastructure. Through its subsidiary Romgaz Black Sea Limited, established following the acquisition of ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Romania Limited, the company is developing the deepwater Neptun Deep offshore natural gas project in the Black Sea under a 50/50 joint venture with operator OMV Petrom, having achieved the Final Investment Decision and awarded major engineering, procurement, construction, and drilling contracts toward planned commercial production. In power generation, Romgaz resumed and advanced the construction and commissioning of the 430 MW combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) thermal power plant at Iernut to optimize electricity efficiency and lower carbon intensity. To finance its capital-intensive offshore development and sustainable energy initiatives, the company established a multi-currency Euro Medium Term Note (EMTN) programme and executed its inaugural international bond issuances. Additionally, Romgaz continues to pursue energy transition investments, incorporating solar photovoltaic projects and evaluating hydrogen and low-carbon power technologies to diversify its long-term generation capacity.
