- OMV Petrom SA is an integrated energy company and the largest producer of crude oil and natural gas in Southeastern Europe. Founded in 1997 through the consolidation of Romania's state-owned petroleum assets and headquartered in Bucharest, Romania, the company operates as a subsidiary of Austria-based OMV AG, with the Romanian State holding a significant minority equity stake. OMV Petrom SA conducts operations across three principal business segments: Exploration and Production; Refining and Marketing; and Gas and Power. The company maintains an extensive operational presence across Romania and neighboring Southeastern European markets, including Bulgaria, Serbia, and the Republic of Moldova.
The company's core products and services encompass a comprehensive portfolio of upstream hydrocarbons, refined fuels, specialty petroleum products, electricity, and retail offerings. In its Exploration and Production segment, OMV Petrom SA engages in the geological exploration, reservoir development, and extraction of conventional and offshore hydrocarbons, supplying crude oil; associated natural gas; condensate; and natural gas liquids. In its Refining and Marketing segment, the company processes crude feedstocks at its Petrobrazi refinery and commercializes refined products, providing standard and premium automotive motor fuels including gasoline, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gas marketed under the Petrom, OMV, and MaxxMotion brand names; commercial and industrial fuels, such as heavy fuel oil, light heating oil, and marine bunker fuels; aviation turbine fuels supplied to commercial airports and airlines; specialty bitumens and polymer-modified asphalt binders for infrastructure construction; petroleum coke and elemental sulfur; industrial and automotive lubricants; convenience store merchandise, food service solutions, and car wash facilities distributed via its regional filling station network; and electric vehicle charging infrastructure operated under the OMV e-Motion and Renovatio brands. In its Gas and Power segment, the company provides wholesale and retail natural gas supply and transmission balancing to industrial consumers, municipal utilities, and commercial entities; electricity generation through the 860-megawatt Brazi gas-fired combined-cycle power plant; renewable power generation from solar photovoltaic and wind installations; and wholesale electricity trading and green certificate management.
OMV Petrom SA serves a broad client base comprising private motorists, commercial transport operators, agricultural enterprises, industrial manufacturing plants, utilities, aviation operators, and public sector organizations. Its asset footprint includes the Petrobrazi refinery with an annual processing capacity of 4.5 million metric tons, an 860 MW thermal power plant, extensive storage and distribution terminals, and a network of approximately 780 retail filling stations across Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Moldova.
In recent strategic developments and corporate changes under its Strategy 2030 energy transition plan, OMV Petrom SA has executed substantial capital investments to expand its offshore natural gas assets, renewable power generation capacity, and low-carbon fuels production. The company approved the final investment decision and initiated offshore construction contracts for the Neptun Deep deepwater gas project in the Black Sea in a 50/50 partnership with Romgaz, targeted for commercial production by 2027. In the renewable energy and e-mobility sector, OMV Petrom completed the acquisition of Renovatio Asset Management, absorbing the largest electric vehicle charging network in Romania, and acquired a 50% equity stake in a renewable portfolio comprising approximately 1 GW of wind and photovoltaic capacity. Furthermore, the company established a joint venture with Complexul Energetic Oltenia to construct four utility-scale solar photovoltaic parks totaling 450 MW of capacity. At its Petrobrazi refinery, OMV Petrom commenced construction of a sustainable aviation fuel and hydrotreated vegetable oil production facility alongside two dedicated green hydrogen production plants supported by European Union funding, accelerating its operational transition into low-carbon fuels and regional green energy supply.
