Business
Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) is South Korea's largest electric utility, responsible for the transmission, distribution, and sale of electricity to industrial, commercial, residential, educational, and agricultural customers; it develops electric power resources and oversees generation through subsidiaries encompassing nuclear, hydro, coal, liquefied natural gas, oil, wind, and solar sources with a total installed capacity of 83,235 MW across 794 units and 35,596 circuit kilometers of transmission lines as of December 2023. Founded in 1961 through the merger of predecessor electric companies and headquartered in Naju-si, Jeollanam-do, Republic of Korea, KEPCO operates domestically via six power generation subsidiaries—Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, Korea South-East Power, Korea Midland Power, Korea Western Power, Korea Southern Power, and Korea East-West Power—along with key units including KEPCO E&C for nuclear and thermal plant engineering; KEPCO Nuclear Fuel for light-water and heavy-water reactor fuel design and manufacturing; Korea Plant Service & Engineering for maintenance of power generation, transmission, and industrial facilities; and Korea Electric Power Data Network for IT services spanning generation to sales. The company maintains a global footprint with offices in the United States, Japan, China, UAE, Vietnam, South Africa, UK, Iran, and Dominican Republic, supporting overseas power plant operations, transmission and distribution projects in 18 countries, nuclear fuel procurement via stakes in mines and suppliers, and initiatives in wind power and smart grid technologies such as the Jeju Smart Grid Demonstration Project. Majority state-owned at 51.10%, KEPCO reported assets of KRW 239 trillion and sales of KRW 23.3 trillion in 2024 first quarter, with recent developments including a return to profitability in 2024 after four years, resumption of dividend payments, consecutive electricity rate hikes amid stabilized raw material prices, record quarterly profit expectations for third quarter 2025 driven by reduced fuel costs and peak season effects, surging stock performance with foreign ownership rising to 22.39% on strong investor buying, and growing prospects in overseas nuclear power including potential U.S. orders discussed at the 2025 APEC summit.
