The company serves individuals, small to mid-sized businesses and commercial customers primarily in Virginia and North Carolina, where it maintains 64 branches as of May 2025 and holds $4.8 billion in assets as of June 30, 2025. Founded in 1974 and headquartered in Martinsville, Virginia, Carter Bankshares focuses on commercial and consumer lending in the Southeastern United States. In December 2024, the company completed the acquisition of two branches from First Reliance Bank in North Carolina, adding $55.9 million in deposits and 10 new associates; it also announced a stock repurchase program and reported second quarter 2025 financial results reflecting ongoing expansion efforts.
