Business
Champion Iron Limited (TSX: CIA; ASX: CIA; OTCQX: CIAFF), through its wholly-owned subsidiary Quebec Iron Ore Inc., engages in the mining, exploration, development and production of iron ore properties in the Labrador Trough of northern Quebec, Canada. The company operates the Bloom Lake Mining Complex, an open-pit iron ore mine located approximately 13 kilometres north of Fermont, Quebec, with two concentration plants powered primarily by renewable hydroelectricity and a combined nameplate capacity of 15 million wet metric tonnes per annum of high-grade 66.2% Fe iron ore concentrate featuring low contaminants; it also produces 67.5% Fe direct reduction quality concentrate and is upgrading half of its capacity to direct reduction pellet feed (DRPF) with up to 69% Fe iron content for decarbonized steelmaking. Champion ships its premium-priced iron ore products by rail from Bloom Lake to the Sept-Îles port in Quebec for global export to customers in China, Japan, the Middle East, Europe, South Korea, India and Canada; in addition, it owns the Kami Project located 21 kilometres southeast of Bloom Lake near existing infrastructure, as well as a portfolio of exploration and development properties including the Kamistiatusset Project, Consolidated Fire Lake North and the Cluster II portfolio within 60 kilometres south of Bloom Lake. Founded in 2006 and headquartered at 91 Evans Street, Rozelle, New South Wales, Australia, with key operations managed from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the company targets steel manufacturers seeking high-purity, low-carbon iron ore inputs. Recent developments include the July 2025 definitive partnership agreement with Nippon Steel Corporation and Sojitz Corporation for the Kami Project, under which Champion retains a 51% operating interest while securing up to $490 million in partner contributions ahead of potential investment decisions; completion of the $500 million DRPF project at Bloom Lake on schedule for first commercial shipments in early 2026 with over 80% of capital expended; a US$500 million senior notes issuance due 2032 in June 2025 to bolster liquidity; updated mineral resources and reserves for Bloom Lake; and declaration of its ninth consecutive semi-annual dividend of $0.10 per share in FY2026.
