Business
Compass Minerals International, Inc. produces and markets essential minerals including salt, magnesium chloride, and sulfate of potash (SOP) primarily in North America and the United Kingdom. Headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas, with roots dating to 1844, the company operates through two main segments: Salt, which mines, produces, processes, and distributes sodium chloride and magnesium chloride via underground mining at facilities like the Goderich, Ontario mine (world's largest with 9 million tons annual capacity), Cote Blanche, Louisiana (3.4 million tons), and Winsford, UK (1.5 million tons), mechanical evaporation plants in Kansas, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Nova Scotia, and solar evaporation at the Great Salt Lake in Utah (1.5 million tons salt, 750,000 tons magnesium chloride annually); and Plant Nutrition, which manufactures SOP fertilizer at the Great Salt Lake (largest in North America at 350,000 tons annually) and Wynyard, Saskatchewan for high-value crops sensitive to chloride-based potash, with sales focused on the Western and Southeastern U.S. and exports to Latin America, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. Salt products encompass bulk treated and untreated highway deicing rock salt for states, provinces, municipalities, and contractors; liquid and flake magnesium chloride for deicing and dust control; treated salt for low temperatures; rock salt for the chlor-alkali industry; and consumer/industrial lines including deicing products, water conditioning salts, culinary salts, animal nutrition blends with magnesium/calcium/potassium chloride, swimming pool minerals, and other applications; while SOP supports growers worldwide. Recent developments include evaluating acquisition interest from private equity firms and potential buyers like Koch Industries amid talks reported in late 2024, following termination of a lithium extraction project at the Great Salt Lake in February 2025 due to regulatory changes after a 2022 announcement and $252 million equity investment from Koch Minerals; impairment charges of $51 million on Great Salt Lake operations and $32 million on its fire-retardant business after losing a key U.S. Forest Service contract; divestiture of remaining plant micronutrient assets to Koch Agronomic Services in 2021; and increased stakes by investors including SailingStone Capital Partners reaching 11.55% ownership in 2024.
