Business
CNX Resources Corporation (NYSE: CNX), an independent ultra-low carbon intensive natural gas exploration, development, production, midstream, and technology company, operates primarily in the Appalachian Basin, focusing on the Marcellus Shale and Utica Shale formations in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia; it also develops coalbed methane properties in Virginia and pursues methane capture and abatement programs from coal mines. The company produces and sells pipeline-quality natural gas and natural gas liquids to wholesalers, utilities, and industrial customers; it owns and operates approximately 2,700 miles of natural gas gathering pipelines, natural gas processing facilities, and 1,400 miles of water pipelines through its CNX Water Assets unit, which manages water sourcing, treatment, transfer, and third-party sales; additional services encompass advanced technology initiatives including 100% electric hydraulic fracturing fleets, compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), and innovative products such as responsibly mined gas (RMG) for data centers and sustainable energy solutions. Founded in 1860 as Consolidation Coal Company and headquartered in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, CNX Resources traces its roots through a series of evolutions, including the 2017 spin-off from Consol Energy and name change from CONSOL Energy Inc., positioning it as one of the largest natural gas producers in the United States with 8.5 trillion cubic feet of proved gas equivalent reserves, over 4,400 net producing wells, and more than 1 million net acres of leasehold. In recent developments, CNX completed the $505 million acquisition of Apex Energy II's natural gas upstream and midstream assets in January 2025, expanding its stacked Marcellus and Utica leasehold in the CPA region and enhancing infrastructure for future development; it launched AutoSep Technologies joint venture with Deep Well Services in April 2024 for automated flowback operations and advanced lower-carbon CNG/LNG production with NuBlu Energy; further initiatives include partnerships for hydrogen-based aviation fuel at Pittsburgh International Airport, FreeSpin turboexpander technology with Sapphire Technologies for zero-emission electricity, and radical transparency programs with Pennsylvania regulators on emissions and safety data. CNX maintains a vertically integrated model with leading operational efficiencies, generating consistent free cash flow—23 consecutive quarters as of late 2025—while prioritizing sustainability through methane abatement, all-electric fracking, and community investments via the CNX Foundation.
