Business
Capital One Financial Corporation (NYSE: COF-PL), founded in 1994 and headquartered in McLean, Virginia, operates as a diversified bank holding company specializing in credit cards, consumer banking, auto loans, savings accounts, and commercial banking services across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The company serves consumers, small businesses, and commercial clients through its three primary segments: Credit Card, which issues Visa and Mastercard branded cards, co-branded cards, secured cards, and small business cards with approximately $107 billion in U.S. loans outstanding as of late 2018 and additional portfolios in Canada and the U.K.; Consumer Banking, offering checking and savings accounts including 360 Performance Savings and 360 Savings, money market accounts, retail loans, and one of the largest U.S. auto finance portfolios with over $56 billion in car loans; and Commercial Banking, providing term loans, lines of credit, letters of credit, depository services, treasury management, and capital markets solutions secured by commercial, multifamily, and industrial properties totaling around $70 billion in loans. Capital One maintains approximately 750 branches, including café-style locations, and over 2,000 ATMs primarily in the U.S., with additional corporate offices in Richmond, Virginia; New York; Plano, Texas; and international sites in London and Toronto. In May 2025, Capital One completed its $35.3 billion all-stock acquisition of Discover Financial Services, integrating Discover-branded credit cards, the Discover payments network, PULSE, and Diners Club International into its offerings while committing to a $265 billion Community Benefits Plan for lending and economic development; the deal positions the combined entity as a major competitor to Visa and Mastercard with expanded network capabilities and board enhancements from Discover executives.
