Business
Carrefour S.A. Carrefour SA is a French multinational retailer that operates hypermarkets, supermarkets, grocery stores, and convenience stores, offering a wide range of food and non-food products including fresh produce, packaged goods, household items, clothing, electronics, and own-brand lines such as Carrefour Quality Lines, Reflets de France, and organic products; it also provides financial services, e-commerce platforms, mobile telephony under Carrefour Mobile, and cash-and-carry operations through Promocash. The company serves consumer and business customers across various formats, with a strong emphasis on price competitiveness, sustainability initiatives like Act for Food, and omnichannel shopping experiences. Founded in 1959 and headquartered in Massy, in the Paris metropolitan area, France, Carrefour conducts operations in over 40 countries, primarily in Europe (France, Spain, Belgium, Romania, Poland), Latin America (Brazil via Atacadão, Carrefour Retail, and Sam's Club; Argentina), Africa, and parts of Asia, with approximately 14,000 stores worldwide as of 2024. In recent developments, Carrefour acquired Cora & Match in France in 2024, integrating these assets with a confirmed €130 million synergy target by 2027, and bought out minority stakes in its Brazilian operations in June 2025 to enhance management flexibility and refinance local debt for improved cash flow. The company entered exclusive negotiations in July 2025 to sell its Italian operations to NewPrinces Group, aiming to refocus on core markets amid challenging conditions there, while selling a 7% stake in Carmila, its shopping center subsidiary, for approximately €170 million. Additionally, in 2025, the Saadé family acquired a 4% stake, becoming the second-largest shareholder with a board seat from December 2025; Carrefour formed the Concordis buying alliance with Coopérative U for enhanced purchasing power starting 2026 negotiations; and signed partnerships like a Power Purchase Agreement with Suez for renewable energy and Sustainable Linked Business Plans with suppliers including Coca-Cola and L'Oréal. In France, it expanded convenience stores by 274 in H1 2025 and integrated acquisitions like Puig & fils and Magne groups' supermarkets from Groupe Casino.
