Founded in 1871 and headquartered in Hanover, Lower Saxony, the company operates through its Tires and ContiTech group sectors, with Tires encompassing premium passenger car, light truck, truck, and bus tires under brands including Continental, General Tire, Viking, Uniroyal, Semperit, Barum, Gislaved, and Matador; advanced driver assistance systems; chassis and safety components such as brake systems and electronic stability control; powertrain technologies; interior systems including infotainment, connectivity, body security, and driver interfaces; and rubber and plastics products via ContiTech for industrial applications in mining, construction, energy, off-highway mobility, and automotive sectors. Continental serves major original equipment manufacturers like Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Ford, Toyota, and Stellantis across more than 50 countries, with significant production in Europe, North America, and Asia, including megafactories for economies of scale and facilities such as those in Sumter, South Carolina, and Clinton, Mississippi. In recent strategic realignments as of 2025, Continental completed the spin-off of its Automotive group sector into the independent listed company Aumovio in September, agreed to sell the ContiTech Original Equipment Solutions business area with completion planned for late 2025, and confirmed the full sale of ContiTech targeted for 2026 to focus as a pure-play tire champion; it also launched sustainable tire innovations like the UltraContact NXT with up to 65 percent renewable and recycled materials and the Conti Urban HA 5 NXT for electric buses, entered a strategic partnership with AQP Industrial Service for mining conveyor solutions in Peru, invested over $85 million in a new rubber mixing facility in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, and sold its drum brakes production site in Cairo Montenotte, Italy, to Mutares while expanding sustainable material use in tire production toward a 40 percent target by 2030.
