Business
Cenovus Energy Inc. is a Canadian-based integrated energy company that develops, produces, refines, transports and markets crude oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids and refined petroleum products. Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta and founded in 2009, the company operates across Canada, the United States and the Asia Pacific region; its upstream activities encompass oil sands projects in northern Alberta utilizing steam-assisted gravity drainage technology, thermal and conventional crude oil and natural gas projects in Western Canada, crude oil production offshore Newfoundland and Labrador, and natural gas and natural gas liquids production offshore China and Indonesia, while its downstream segment includes upgrading, refining and marketing operations in Canada and the United States producing gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other refined products. Cenovus Energy serves industrial, commercial and consumer markets through its vertically integrated model spanning exploration, production, refining and marketing. In November 2025, Cenovus completed its acquisition of MEG Energy Corp., adding approximately 110,000 barrels per day of low-cost, long-life oil sands production from adjacent Christina Lake assets and generating expected annual synergies exceeding $400 million by 2028 through operational and commercial efficiencies. The company also entered a voting support agreement with Strathcona Resources Ltd. in October 2025 related to the MEG transaction and sold certain thermal assets including the Vawn thermal project for initial consideration of $75 million plus contingent payments. Cenovus maintains segments in Upstream including Oil Sands, Conventional and Offshore; Downstream covering Canadian and U.S. Manufacturing; and Corporate and Eliminations, with its shares listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and New York Stock Exchange under the ticker CVE.
