Business
Dolby Laboratories, Inc. develops pioneering audio and imaging technologies that redefine entertainment and communication experiences across an expansive array of platforms. The company engineers and licenses a comprehensive suite of digital audio solutions, including Dolby AC-4, designed to deliver advanced audio to diverse playback environments. Its acclaimed sound technologies feature Dolby Atmos, recognized for its immersive, three-dimensional audio for cinematic presentations and a growing number of consumer devices. Additional audio codecs like Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby TrueHD provide robust multichannel and lossless sound for various media applications, alongside efficient digital audio coding solutions such as AAC and HE-AAC. In visual technology, Dolby Vision offers an exceptional imaging experience, delivering ultra-vivid colors, striking contrast, and enhanced detail for both professional cinema and consumer devices. The company also provides essential digital video codecs like AVC and HEVC, ensuring high bandwidth efficiency across a wide range of media devices. For enhanced communication, Dolby Voice provides superior spatial audio and noise reduction for conferencing systems. Operating primarily on a licensing model, which accounts for the substantial majority of its revenue, Dolby grants manufacturers and content providers access to its proprietary intellectual property. Complementing this, Dolby Laboratories designs and manufactures specialized hardware, including digital cinema servers, processors, amplifiers, loudspeakers, and video conferencing solutions for the cinema, broadcast, and entertainment industries. Furthermore, it delivers a range of services supporting theatrical and television production, broadcast operations, and home entertainment. Dolby's extensive client base includes film studios, content creators, post-production facilities, cinema operators, broadcasters, video game developers, and numerous consumer electronics manufacturers integrating its technologies into televisions, mobile devices, PCs, soundbars, and, increasingly, automotive entertainment systems. Recent advancements in fiscal year 2025 include the expanded integration of Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision into various automotive brands such as Audi, Tata, Mahindra, and Mercedes, and new smartphone models featuring Dolby Vision Capture. The company also continues to drive immersive experiences in major live sports broadcasts and streaming services. Founded by Ray Dolby in London in 1965, the company later established its headquarters in San Francisco, California, from where it continues its global operations.
