Business
DURECT Corporation develops epigenetic therapies targeting dysregulated DNA methylation to treat serious conditions including acute organ injury such as alcohol-associated hepatitis and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis; its lead candidate larsucosterol (DUR-928), an oral small molecule epigenetic regulator, completed Phase 2b AHFIRM trial showing promising mortality benefits and advances toward Phase 3 registration; the company also offers long-acting injectable platforms including SABER and CLOUD for sustained release of small molecules, peptides and proteins; FDA-approved POSIMIR (bupivacaine) for post-surgical analgesia under exclusive U.S. license to Innocoll Pharmaceuticals with DURECT retaining ex-U.S. rights; research tools via ALZET osmotic pumps sold globally for preclinical animal studies; and royalties from partnered products including Methydur (extended-release methylphenidate for ADHD with Orient Pharma), PERSERIS (risperidone for schizophrenia with Indivior), and an ophthalmology product with Santen Pharmaceuticals. Founded in 1998 and headquartered in Cupertino, California, DURECT operates primarily in the U.S. with worldwide partnerships and focuses on biopharmaceutical development and drug delivery technologies for chronic diseases. In July 2025, DURECT entered a definitive merger agreement with Bausch Health Companies Inc., under which Bausch Health Americas acquired DURECT for $1.75 per share plus up to $350 million in larsucosterol sales milestones; Bausch Health completed the acquisition on September 11, 2025, establishing DURECT as its indirect wholly-owned subsidiary and expanding its liver disease portfolio; in November 2024, DURECT sold its ALZET product line to Lafayette Instrument Co. for $17.5 million.
