Business
Shell plc, formed in 1907 through the merger of Royal Dutch Petroleum Company and The Shell Transport and Trading Company Ltd, is a global energy and petrochemical company headquartered in London with primary operations based in The Hague, Netherlands; it engages in the exploration, production, refining, marketing and trading of oil, natural gas and related products across more than 70 countries, serving over 33 million retail customers daily and 1 million commercial and industrial clients. The company operates through key segments including Upstream, which explores and extracts crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids from deepwater and conventional fields; Integrated Gas, which liquefies natural gas into LNG, converts it to gas-to-liquids products and manages trading, marketing and distribution; and Downstream, Renewables and Energy Solutions, encompassing fuels and lubricants marketing for transport, manufacturing, mining, power generation, agriculture and construction; chemicals and products manufacturing from refineries and energy parks producing petrochemicals, biofuels and oil products; renewables such as wind, solar and hydrogen power generation; electric vehicle charging via Shell Mobility's global network of around 44,000 stations; carbon capture and storage hubs; and nature-based solutions alongside trading in crude oil, refined products, LNG carriers and environmental products. Recent developments include the completion of acquisitions increasing stakes in the Ursa platform in the US Gulf of Mexico to 61% and the Bonga deepwater field in Nigeria to 65%, enhancing upstream liquids production; a final investment decision by its CSPC joint venture with CNOOC to expand the petrochemical complex in China with a 1.6 million tonne-per-year ethylene cracker, downstream derivatives and 320,000 tonnes of specialty chemicals like polycarbonates by 2028; investments in carbon storage expansion with Equinor and TotalEnergies; full ownership acquisition of MachineMax for off-highway fleet analytics; and divestments of around 1,000 company-owned retail sites through 2025 to upgrade networks with EV charging and premium lubricants for energy transition sectors.
